Trenton, Maine. Home to a diverse population 23,000 strong. A city regularly voted one of the best places to live in the US. With its magnificent scenery, booming commerce, and wholesome reputation, it is not only a picturesque New England city, it’s also the pinnacle of the American Dream. But scratch the surface and you’ll fine that Trenton isn’t quite as ordinary as it first appears. Much like any city in any country around the world, it has a dark underbelly. If you look—really look—past the Fortune 500 companies and white picket fences, you’ll see that it is anything but mundane. The city plays home to those who are more than human. If you know where to look, you’ll find that two societies, supernatural and human, have existed side by side, largely without human knowledge, for millennia. Together but not joined. Separate but never apart.
Once rulers, the ancient races were forced to assimilate into human society when mankind exploded, populating the earth so rapidly that their numbers soon outweighed their own. And so it has been ever since. For centuries, the sub-society of supernaturals has survived in the shadows, living their secret lives away from human eyes. Bound together by a pact signed hundreds of years ago, one which forbade their most basic urges, the races have been forced to co-exist. For the most part it works. Though the supernatural world still harbours power struggles, with each race believing they are superior to others, they have adapted with the times. Many live as humans in the human world, keeping the secret of the supernatural community close to their vest, neither side—the light or the dark—wishing to draw scrutiny or expose the shared secrets on which they all depend.
But times, they are a-changing. Over the last year, things have started to go awry. The Directorate of Other Races, the governing body charged with policing the supernatural community, has been hit by a growing crime wave. It began with an influx of careless spellcasters and reports of strange animal sightings. But in the last couple of months, these commonplace misdemeanours have escalated to things far more serious. With seemingly random maulings and illegally made vampires being turned loose on the city—the very things the pact was introduced to outlaw—the Directorate is caught in a battle taking place in the moonlit shadows of Trenton. Investigations have been largely fruitless, and with the Directorate bearing down on those under their guard in a bid to find answers, tensions are starting to rise, each faction pointing the finger of blame at the other.
With those committing crimes that risk the exposure of the supernatural world, the Directorate has its hands full and isn’t getting the support of everyone within the community. The pact that has helped to maintain order is about to expire and there are some who don't think that they should agree to its terms again. Tired of living their lives in secret, as if inferior to the humans they are forced to live with, the dark wants to regain the control they once had. They want to take their rightful place at the top of the food chain, and they are willing to fight in order to bring about a new reality. With peace cracking under the pressure of those intent on stirring old conflicts, when the fire of the war between the light and the dark is rekindled, which side will you join? Will you stand with the dark, or against it?
MaS is a brand new intermediate to advanced, mature supernatural/horror RPG which deals with adult themes. While not every post will be R rated, member discretion is advised. It is loosely based on the ideas laid out in Kelley Armstrong’s ‘Women of the Otherworld’ series, and Keri Arthur’s ‘Riley Jenson’ series, though you need not to have read either to join. All of the relevant information is available on the site. You may choose to play one of ten races—clairvoyants, ghosts, half-demons, humans, necromancers, shapeshifters, sorcerers, werewolves, witches, and vampires. All members must fill out an application form for each character and submit a short writing sample before being accepted.
